Difficult Week For Argyle

Plymouth Argyle suffered a tough week on the pitch in the EFL Championship, with two defeats hampering their bid to push towards the top ten in the table.

First up for the Vertu Motors-backed side was a home game against Ipswich Town, who were bidding to move closer to the top of the table after a recent return to form.

Argyle missed an early chance when a shot from Mickel Miller was cleared off the line but the two sides – who had battled for the League 1 title last season – couldn’t be split through the opening half.

Just after the hour mark however, Plymouth fell behind in unfortunately circumstances when a shot from Conor Chaplin took a wicked deflection off Brendan Galloway and beat Conor Hazard in the Argyle net.

Ipswich continued to push for a second goal and doubled their advantage when a corner found its way to Chaplin who nodded the ball down to on-loan Kieffer Moore – who smashed a strike into the net.

Miller saw an effort tipped onto the post late on as Argyle tried to get back into the game but it was Ipswich who took the points as Plymouth suffered a rare home defeat.

From there, Ian Foster and his team headed for a resurgent Sheffield Wednesday, who were on a run of four wins in five games.

The home side created plenty of chances early on, with Ian Poveda having a goal chalked off for offside, and Hazard forced into a number of saves to keep Argyle in the game.

The visitors also had chances, most notably from Miller, but Wednesday grabbed the points when Adam Forshaw lost the ball in his own half and it ended up being crossed into the box for Djeidi Gassama to prod home.

A big game lies ahead this weekend, with Plymouth heading to Blackburn Rovers – who sit one place behind the Pilgrims in the standings.
