Motability Automatic Lease Extensions Reduced to Six Months

Customers who are nearing the end of their lease will receive an automatic six-month lease extension.

  • The changes came into effect from 4th April 2024.
  • Customers previously got a two-year lease extension.
  • The lease extension has been reduced due to improving supply chains.

If you are a Motability customer nearing the end of your lease, you might be aware of lease extensions. Automatic lease extensions were previously two years but have now been reduced to six months. The changes came into effect from 4th April after supply chain improvements.

Read on to find out everything you need to know about the recent changes to automatic lease extensions.

What is a Motability lease extension?

As you enter the final three months of your lease, you have a few options on what to do next.

You can decide to apply for a lease renewal or take advantage of an automatic lease extension.

If you don't start a renewal application, an automatic lease extension will be triggered. This means that you can continue to enjoy your Motability car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) while you look for a new one.

If you have started your renewal application, don't worry. You will still receive the lease extension and can enjoy the great Motability Scheme benefits until your new vehicle arrives.

You can check what your options are by logging into your Motability online account and heading to the 'current lease' section. If you need help setting up your account, read our guide on everything you need to know about a Motability Scheme online account.

Motability will also write to you explaining your options, three months before the end of your lease.

How to prepare for the end of your Motability lease

As well as deciding whether to renew or extend your Motability Scheme lease, there’s also a few other things to note.

Your Motability car will be due for an MOT in the final three months of your lease. This must be completed before you hand the vehicle back or extend the lease. Motability recommends booking an MOT a month before its due date. This gives you extra time should any issues crop up before your lease expires.

The great news is that your MOT test is included in your worry-free Motability package so there’s no need to worry about extra costs.
