Plymouth Argyle battled back from a goal behind to secure a vital point in the latest round of EFL Championship fixtures, with the Vertu Motors-backed side moving three points clear of the drop zone as a result.

The visitors had suffered four defeats in five games following a hectic spell of matches and fell behind in the opening ten minutes when Blackburn’s star striker Sammie Szmodics was able to curl an effort beyond Michael Cooper from the edge of the box.

Argyle had chance to equalise as Mustapha Bundu and Ryan Hardie both went close, before Arnor Sigurdsson struck the post at the other end as Blackburn looked to go two clear.

Having held the lead until half-time despite Argyle having more of the ball, Blackburn were reduced to ten shortly after half-time when Hardie was dragged down by Kyle McFadzean as he broke through the middle – earning the Rovers man a red card for a professional foul.

Hardie then shot narrowly wide as Plymouth chased the equaliser and when he then had another effort cleared off the line, Morgan Whittaker was on hand to end a run of five games without a goal and bring the Pilgrims level.

Although a win for Millwall means Argyle drop a place in the table, the gap to the bottom three is now three points ahead of the visit of Preston North End this weekend.
